HomelessToFarmers is on a mission to eliminate homelessness, poverty and advance society. We are a nonprofit in California. We are very small, new, and thus unproven, but we are trying to do something different. We know that homelessness is an age-old problem. We know that shelters, and advocacy groups exist, but have limitations. In California, the homeless population has increased over the last few years. According to Einstein, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

To end homelessness, we are exploring two ideas, plan A, and plan B. Our “plan A” idea is to call on legislators in Congress and Senate to create more permanent supportive housing by increasing funding for the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) department and at same time restructure it so that it is not subjected to future budget cuts. We have written letters to about 10 senators and house representatives, and we are going to continue to reach out to activist groups to plan a peaceful rally (the largest gathering of homeless people) in Washington DC in the later part of 2021 to demand housing rights if legislators fail to adequately fund and restructure HUD.

Our “plan B” idea is about creating businesses and using those businesses to end homelessness, and farming is a good type of business to start with. This was our first idea, and therefore we named our nonprofit as HomelessToFarmers, but farming is not the only type of business we will explore.

Even if we succeed with plan A, we still see value with pursuing plan B. The total cost for the first year is about $21,000,000 (see our business plan below), but from the second year onward, if our research is correct, we should have about $4,000,000 to $5,000,000 extra, and we should be able to double our capacity every 4 or 5 years. This creates jobs, and helps end homelessness, perhaps at small scale, but actually, the idea of creating businesses and using those businesses to end homelessness is not new. It had been tried by a few successful nonprofits such as Delancey Street, and Homeboy Industries. We intend to study the success of these nonprofits, replicate it, figure out how to scale it, and inspire more people to do the same for their communities, so the power of businesses may not be small collectively.

This revenue would also allow us to work with local schools to change the education system in such a way that it would reduce crimes, gangs, racial issues and violence in our society.

We are not sure how much fund we need to raise for plan A yet, probably not as much as the cost for plan B, but we are raising funds for both ideas concurrently. In today's uncertain time (the virus, the protests / riots), we think that the world needs another Jesus Christ, another Buddha, etc. Looking inside ourselves, we all have the bad characters (greed, jealousy, ignorance, anger), but we also have the good character (kindness).

We can stretch ourselves a bit to help the less fortunate. It could be us. Many of us are living paycheck to paycheck, and are just laid-off from being homeless. Religious leaders taught us to be kind to each other. We want to make the world a better place for ourselves, and our children.
